This story, although presented as fiction, has a ring of truth about it that makes the reader feel like he is immersed in a civil war with a viciousness that is so often represented in the countries south of our border. And mixed up in that are death gangs who interject themselves when hired by Salvadoran rich men and land owners who also prey upon the poor people and this is their way of subjecting them to their will.
The protagonists are Henry Reed, an investigative reporter and his best friend Jean-Michel, a hot shot photographer and the men have worked together for years. They go to El Salvador to find a missing Pastor from Chicago, known for his great ability to raise much money for good works, although he walks under a cloud of suspicion that much of it is show, and that he is a hypocrite. But he had gone to El Salvador to help the people and because of the rumors floating back of how he worked neck and neck with the people, helping wherever he could and living with and like them, this intrigued Reed and Jean-Michel to ascertain whether he was alive or dead and the validity of this loud braggart Pastor suddenly becoming a saint.
The story moves fast, the description of the locations and slum areas that the men passed through allows the reader to actually be there, the depth and insight into the various Salvadorans and Americans brings these people right into the reader's mind, and at every turn, there is a new scene of fast moving action, usually violent and appalling, which makes the reader wonder if that is the truth of the conditions for the population and the Salvadoran government, including the involvement of our own CIA.
This is a page turning story, entertaining, and also thought provoking.
The Alley of Angles is a very unusual novel. Michael Adams write with clarity and precision. The novel is unique in that it successfully combines a suspenseful plot, intelligent characters, and expertly rendered vivid evocations of El Salvador, and, to me, most interesting, informed political comment on the NGO's and the United States's corrupt and brutal involvement in the El Salvadoran Civil War and its aftermath.
The Alley of Angels is a most original novel.

The skillful use of word pictures breathes life into the fascinating characters. The author artfully weaves photography into the plot and utilizes his vision as a photographer to give the reader brilliant mental images of people struggling to survive in war torn San Salvador.
The mind boggling, twisting, intricate, nearly non stop action leaves you wanting more. The thrilling plot, along with the juxtaposition of different cultures, romance, war, journalism, and breath-taking clandestine activities make this book hard to put down.
